Event overview

Before I begin, I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks for your gracious support. With your kind assistance, we were able to hold a very successful 19th MAS Competition.

This most recent Competition saw a record 22 research announcements from a variety of fields, encompassing both oral announcements and post announcement sessions. As a result of some rigorous judging by the panel, the following teams were awarded prizes. In addition, the lively exchange information and discussion on the day helped give a more concrete sense of the potential for societal simulation, as well as providing a space for promoting the further development of the field going forward. I am deeply grateful to all those who participated.

We will continue to place great importance on providing opportunities for communication between users, using the spread of society simulation to contribute to the building of future societies that embody the many wise ideas discussed here.

Lectures

Lecture 1 “Using simulation to design future societies: MAS as a post-AI concept”

Speaker: Kiyoshi Izumi (Professor, University of Tokyo Graduate School)

Societal simulation is becoming increasingly important as a technology to support societies that are not only sustainable, but that can continue to develop. In this lecture, we analyze the artifacts, social systems, and behavior of organizations and groups to be found in real society, and introduce simulation technology for the design of developing systems through the addition of new hardware and software. While introducing case studies from such fields as traffic, disaster prevention, marketing and finance, we describe some of the possibilities and problems in relation to the design of future societies.

Lecture 2 “Utilization of simulation for mechanism design”

Speaker: Kazuo Miyashita (Research Fellow, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology)

Societal implementations of mechanism design that not only incorporate economics but also leverage knowledge from the fields of engineering and information technology have generated significant results in recent years, as exemplified by Google AdWords auctions and frequency band auctions by the FCC in the United States. In this lecture, we provide an outline of the use of computer simulation technology in mechanism design.
